Welcome to Sake Sabo Kurie, a charming teahouse nestled in the picturesque town of Obanazawa, Yamagata. This hidden gem, located at 410 Ginzanshinhata, is a must-visit for anyone seeking a delightful café experience that combines warmth with unique offerings.

The atmosphere at Sake Sabo Kurie is quaint and cozy, creating a haven for both locals and travelers alike. Upon entering, you are greeted by a delightful ambiance that exudes both comfort and charm. It’s small, but every nook radiates a welcoming vibe. With limited seating available, it's advisable to arrive early to snag one of the coveted spots—especially on busy days, as patrons often find themselves waiting in line, eager to indulge in the café's offerings.

While Sake Sabo Kurie is primarily known for its exceptional drinks, the menu also features delicious bites that pair beautifully with your favorite beverages. The star attraction is undoubtedly the Cocoa topped with slightly burnt marshmallows—a decadent delight that harmonizes rich chocolate flavors with toasty notes. One customer, nel anthony lao, emphasized that this is a “must-try," making it clear that this warm beverage brings comfort, especially on chilly days.

Beyond the cocoa, patrons have shared enthusiastic reviews of the café’s coffee, praised by Watanya Morrison as "good," although she noted that the hot chocolate could be improved. Among other highlights are the purin—a wonderfully light dessert that strikes the perfect balance between sweet and bitter, as described by Alisa “With Alice” Korotaeva. For those who enjoy unique flavor profiles, this treat is certainly worth a taste. However, be cautious with the ginger milk, as some have found its sweetness surprising.

In addition to tantalizing treats, Sake Sabo Kurie offers a unique quality: its breathtaking view of the river and occasionally, the picturesque falling snow. Rocky Rex captures the essence of this experience perfectly, describing it as the "perfect spot to have a drink and enjoy the scenery." With blankets available for those who wish to snuggle in while sipping their drinks, this café invites you to relax and soak in the surroundings.

While some might find the staff less friendly, the overall charm and aesthetic of Sake Sabo Kurie far outweigh any shortcomings in service. This teahouse has managed to cultivate a distinct identity that prioritizes comfort, charm, and unique flavors. Whether you're a local or just passing through, make a stop at Sake Sabo Kurie, where each drink offers a warm embrace and each visit feels like a cozy retreat.

Coffee is good. Hot chocolate is so so. The staff is not that friendly but the shop is super cute! Good place for photo

Small yet very warm & cozy teahouse. Recommend: Cocoa with marshmellow is very tasty and warm.

Nice and cozy place. Not many seating places though so have to wait in line for a long time. Purin is amazing, not sweet, pleasantly bitter with syrup. I asked if there is sugar in ginger milk. And waitress confirmed that it’s not sweet. But in reality it was crazy sweet. I couldn’t drink it.

Perfect spot to have a drink and enjoy a view of the river, falling snow, and passers by. Coffee drinks, tea, draft beer, cocktails and a nice whiskey selection. Blankets available and extra seating on the second floor

Incredible! Not only does it have a quaint tea area and spectacular view, the cake and coffee is wonderful. I had the ginger milk and walnut cake, truly delicious. It was quiet so we were the only ones sitting upstairs. The man working here is very friendly and has good English! I spoke in broken Japanese but it wasn’t necessary.

This place is famous for their hot chocolate. I don't particularly like hot chocolate but tried theirs anyway and it was quite nice actually. We also had an affogato and custard pudding with coffee syrup. It was all very tasty. It's a cash only establishment and you have an hour to order eat and leave because they're quite popular and have limited seating.
